How To Squeeze Out More Keywords From The AdWords Keyword Tool
A very short tip about the AdWords keyword tool — which is free to use, as I keep mentioning, no AdWords account needed. (If you do have an AdWords account, though, might as well log into the account and use it from there, you won’t have to prove you’re human.)
Normally, the AdWords keyword tool gives you at most 200 keyword ideas. What most people don’t know is that the list of keywords can vary on each request. So by running the tool multiple times on the same keyword you can generate a slightly larger set of keywords.
Here are the steps:
- Search for a keyword (or analyze a site)
- Scroll through the results and click all the Add all links so all the keywords end up in the list on the righthand side of the browser window
- Go back to the top and hit the Get keyword ideas button again.
- Scroll through the results. Any new keywords not already in the list will be obvious, since they’re in blue and the other ones are in grey.
- Repeat this process until you don’t get any more keywords. Try checking or unchecking the Use synonyms option while doing this to get even more keywords.
The only downside with this approach is that when you move the keywords over into the righthand side you lose all the search and competition data. If you plan on analyzing the data, you’ll want to download the spreadsheet format for the keyword data after each press of the Get keyword ideas. You’ll then have to merge the data into one big spreadsheet.

Good post. I always use google adwords tool to find keywords for my websites. It is great to see that it is showing figures in numbers now instead of graphics.

Nice tips. I’ve used it one time and downloaded the data in excel and tried to compare them until I get a minimal amount that i can use for my keyword.
Nice write-up. I will have to use those tips along with wordtracker.
Keywords are a tricky thing. It’s nice to see 100 keyword suggestions, but you should always pick 2 or 3 keywords at most and optimize your website for these words. Cause you can have 100 keywords, but how does that help you if you rank #20 for those keywords and don’t show up on the first page of Google? Make sure you look at what keywords your top competition is using, and use only the keywords that will bring the right traffic to your site.
I have always wondered how to get more out of adwords. Thank you for the tip brother!
Great post. I just started to use AdWords so I’m looking for ways to get the most out of AdWords.
Thanks.
oh great technique i won very less (65$) adword credit on some forum for designing a logo and now i am planning to use them when i am having a stable blog. i listened someone saying you should start with 0.1$ and do the increment of .1$ everyweek as your traffic increase still i am not sure about this =S
This is a way better tactic that using Google suggest - it give you both the search volume as well as lots of other important information (average CPC!). I love Google for making all this available in AdWords.
Thank you for this useful tip.
After step 2 you can also select and copy the first keyword in the righthand side column and perform a new keyword search with this keyword. All suggested keywords are related to the first search results.
Next step is to select and copy the second keyword……
Nice tips man.. I was using Adwords from very long time.. The keyword tool is really very helpful. You can actually enter a website to get keywords also…
i usually just scroll thru the list provided and make my assumptions based on the keywords with over 100k hits. but i never knew you could search for more. thanks for the tips.
In my opinion it is better to look for synonyms in a dictionary then do all of the words including the synonyms and then do make a search with synonyms checked on button. You will get a lot of results!
Very nice guide!
I have always been bad at selecting keywords, hopefully, using your guide, my luck is about to change.
