Profitable AdSense Article Marketing

As promised, here’s a tip on how to do effective article marketing with the help of the free free AdWords keyword tool. As I’ve mentioned before, article writing and submission is a simple and cost-effective way to get links and traffic to your AdSense pages. But you can profit more from the traffic if you do it right.

The idea is very simple: buy low, sell high. You write two sets of content for a given topic/niche: one set (the traffic set) is for distribution on other sites, the other set (the money set) is for publication on your own site. The traffic set targets low-paying (but often high-traffic) keywords, the money set targets the higher-paying keywords.

Let’s use the broad topic of cooking as an example. Type cooking into the AdWords keyword tool and sort the results by search volume and you’ll get something like this:

cooking keywords

Many cooking terms aren’t going to pay you much per-click — remember, the values you see here are what AdWords advertisers pay to have their ads shown on Google, the earnings AdSense publishers make from ads will be much lower. What we’re looking for are relative values, however. Here’s how I’d group the keywords shown above:

Traffic Set Money Set
cooking turkey cooking schools
cooking recipes cooking school
home cooking cooking classes
cooking online cooking class
cooking cooking com

I’ve arbitrarily chosen the $2 mark as the cutoff between the two sets: keywords in the traffic set have values less than $2, those in the money set have values more than $2. Notice how the traffic keywords are generally about “do-it-yourself” cooking and the money keywords are about formal cooking instruction.

For traffic, then, write articles about recipes and cooking techniques and distribute them using EzineArticles, iSnare, and other article directories and submission services. For example, “How To Cook A Turkey” would target the “cooking turkey” keyword. On the other hand, for your own site/blog you’d want to write an article like “Cooking Classes Are For Everyone” to target the “cooking classes” and “cooking class” keywords.

The trick that makes this all work is to link the traffic article to the money article with a carefully-worded resource box:

To wow your company next Thanksgiving, take a cooking class and learn how to cook a turkey with all the trimmings. Find cooking classes near you with our national listing of cooking schools.

Notice the use of “cooking class” and “cooking schools” in the link anchor text. While the body of the article focuses on turkey cooking, the resource box focuses on the cooking classes. The two links should go directly to a page (or pages) relating to formal cooking instruction. Thus you get SEO benefits from the article (links to your pages with the all-important money keywords) and very targeted traffic (anyone who clicks the links to visit your site).

If you’ve chosen good money keywords, your per-click earnings should be much higher than they’d be if you’d just blindly targeted high-traffic keywords. (Don’t feel sad for the article directory: the directory will also make money, of course, because some of the readers will click ads on the directory site, but not as much as your pages will… although they’ll probably make more in terms of sheer volume.)

That, my friends, is the key to profitable AdSense article marketing.

    Eric,

This is the best article I’ve seen on adsense strategy in a long time. Great ideas here.

    Thanks,

    Joe

You’re welcome, glad you found it useful.

I just broke into the top 30 for the “adsense” query on Google. Now if only a few more people would link to me with “adsense” as the anchor text then maybe I can go even higher… hint, hint :-)

This is a great post. Thank you so much for explaining it in such a great detail. Linking traffic articles to the money article is a very simple trick which most people miss.

    thanks.

Thanks for this article, but :

i dont figure out how to implement this on other niches … i own a car news website and the search terms for traffic are 4 words long, but the highest payout keyword its only 2 or max 3.

    Have a nice day.

  6. Eric Giguere on August 6th, 2008 2:06 pm

The “money” keywords will be very different depending on the niche. Not every niche will have keywords that are worth several dollars… you might have to set your traffic-vs-money point to be the $1 mark. You may only get 10-25 cents per click at that level, but if you get a lot of volume that can still be good income.

Then again, maybe you’re not looking in the right spots. Try “hybrid cars” and you’ll see some values over $4. Same for “gas mileage”. These sound like great and very topical ideas for a car news site…

    Eric,

Whilst I like the strategy you’ve described, I think the benefits would be boosted and greater traffic would be attracted to your website with more attention to the keywords targeted by the articles to be published on the directory.

For example, by looking at the long tail keywords for “cooking turkey” and “home cooking” it could be possible to identify a number of related keywords that attract good traffic and have relatively little competition.

As major directories like EzineArticles get their articles listed on Google results pages, by targeting keywords with low competition and optimizing the article for that keyword, the submitted article stands a very good chance of being listed on the first page of Google Results. This will attract far more traffic to your website than an article that is just another leaf in the forest.

An inexpensive program like MicroNicheFinder is designed to do this sort of keyword analysis efficiently - to identify long tail keywords with acceptable traffic and low competition.

Ivan, I don’t think you’re saying anything contradictory. You’re just expanding on the “traffic” side of things by going after low competition keywords. The example I gave was quite simple and was meant to illustrate the difference between the “traffic” and “money” keywords. I do agree that blanketing article directories with long tail keywords is a good approach. Likely those long tail keywords will be less lucrative as well, so they still fit into the “traffic” set.

Maybe I should do a review of MicroNicheFinder, it looks interesting!

This is also the basic principle behind Arbitrage on the internet - driving low cost traffic to high paying revenue pages. There are many who do very well with this idea by expanding the technique to use PPC as a source of traffic rather than articles.

They select from the outset niches that are known to pay well from advertising - sectors such as health, finance, gambling, pharmaceuticals, etc.

There is an important HOWEVER to using PPC in place of (or as well as) articles - Google Adsense doesn’t like you sending PPC traffic to web pages containing Adsense. You will lose your account with them if you do this.

As a result, strategies have been developed using the basic ideas above but excluding Adsense when PPC traffic is delivered. For this, usually a variety of other search engines will be used to provide revenue.

Google has no problem with receiving traffic from articles. Don’t use Adsense when delivering PPC traffic.

Nice article. But with out precious traffic volume how one can get clicks? With out attractive articles getting good traffic is not possible or better to say tough and not “Money Set” category articles gives average $4.
I think “Traffic Set” article is more effective to get traffic and traffic is the main option in affiliates marketing.

    Thank U
