Pounce on that niche!

Here's a tip for you: keep a running list of niche topics to explore so that when you have some free time you can do a bit of keyword research using tools like the AdWords keyword tool and/or AdSenseAccelerator. (Be sure to read Plumb AdWords for keywords for more on this.) In most cases, those niche topics will not be as lucrative as you might think, but sometimes you'll run across a keyword that looks particularly good, often by accident. Consider this screenshot from the AdWords console on some keyword research I did last night:

I've left out the keywords themselves, obviously, but look closely at the area I've highlighted, which shows a keyword that has almost no advertiser competition (the bar on the left) but an average number of searches (the bar on the right). This is the scenario you want in your niche search. You should use other means to confirm this, of course. Some quick metrics would involve looking at how many pages containing the keyword are found in Google, Yahoo and MSN. Use other free tools like NicheBOT or the Yahoo keyword suggestion tool to confirm the search metrics.

Then, once you've found your niche, it's time to pounce! After all, there are lots of people out there just like you looking for that perfect, underserved niched. Put up a simple single-page AdSense site and work on getting it listed in the search engines. Then start working on a longer-term plan to plumb that niche even more with a different, more conventional site or blog, though you may want to wait to see if the single-page site actually proves that the niche is viable.
