Post-24 Blues
This is totally off-topic, but I’m looking for some suggestions from my readers. My wife and I like action shows, and were disappointed last year when Alias went off the air (although it did get very weird in the last season). So in January I told her I’d like to give 24 a try, even though she’d always been resistant. (No, I don’t know why…) The 6th season was just about to start and so I convinced her to give it a shot. We were hooked as soon as we started watching!
It soon became clear that we were missing a lot of the backstory, however, so we started concurrently watching Season 1 of 24, the one where
Jack Bauer must foil the assassination of presidential candidate David Palmer. We then immediately proceeded to watch the second season where Jack has to stop terrorists from detonating a nuclear bomb (hmm, sounds somewhat like season 6 — I guess there’s bound to be some repetition when you’re dealing with a counter-terrorist unit). Then on to season 3 and a deadly virus that could wipe out the United States (and presumably Canada as well), season 4 where terrorists attempt to take over and meltdown nuclear power plants (I didn’t know the US had so many of them…), and finally season 5 where terrorists steal a large cache of nerve gas and much mayhem (martial law in LA!) results. I can see why the Amazon reviews for each season over overwhelmingly positive. It’s certainly been a fun ride for us! (Although I must admit that the season 6 storyline was much weaker than the two seasons that preceded it. Season 5 was especially good, we watched the last two hours of it last night, which is what prompted this post….)
But now the ride’s over and we’re wondering what to watch. So I turn to you, my readers, because there must some of you must have similar tastes in TV shows to watch. Leave me a comment with some suggestions for things to watch/rent while we wait for the seventh season of 24 to arrive early next year…

I also watched Alias and was pretty sad when it ended. I agree though, season 5 was like a completely different show.
Anyway, after Alias I got into Sopranos and it is now my favorite show of all time. I was much more sad when it ended than when Alias ended. Not really an action flick, but very very entertaining. The characters are awesome.
I am just starting Season 1 of 24 now. I like it so far, but I havent gotten hooked like I did with Alias and Sopranos. I also think I might give Lost a try, but I have heard a lot of people don’t like the way the story has been going lately.
Lost series 1 I loved
Lost series 2 was okay
Lost series 3 I stopped watching about 4 episodes in, it really started to bore me.
Lost is an excellent idea, well implemented, but strung out for too long. One series would have been enough and if they’ve done it all and wrapped it up at the end I think it would have been an all time classic. But it’s just going to dwindle out I think now.
I’ve really REALLY got into Heroes now (I think the last episode of series 1 is airing next week here in the UK on the SciFi channel). But again, I think they’ll probably string it out too long in the future and spoil it.
I’ve never got into Alias, 24 of Sopranos. but I guess that means there’s plenty of good things for me to catch on the re-runs. I get a mental block that won’t allow me to watch a series of something unless I watch it from the very beginning so by the time I hear about people liking things it’s too late
Eric, check out The Shield! Or The Closer. Or both!!
The problem I have with Lost is the same I had with Alias… and the show is done by some of the same people. I don’t have any faith that the story is going anywhere - I don’t think the writers have answers to the multitude of questions they’ve raised - in spite of the fact that the show’s creators insist otherwise. And I’m leery that the show will end up being dropped before they have a chance to sort it out. I’ve been burned like this on a number of shows in the past.
Thank you for the suggestions. I was wondering about the Sopranos and will definitely check out The Shield as well. I’ve seen a few episodes of Lost and I can’t say it appeals as much, even though I know Shoemoney is a big fan. (Hey, everyone’s different!)
Eric,
If you run out of TV shows to watch, try the two Bourne movies — The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy. The third installment is in theaters (I’ll wait for the DVD).
I’ve seen them already (and read the books), but thanks for the suggestion…
I think the problem is JJ Abrams ditched Lost just like he did with Alias. It seems he is really good at creating series, but as soon as he abandons them they go down hill.
I forgot about Heroes! Loved it, it was a great show to watch during the week while I was waiting for the next Sopranos episode to air. I wasnt huge on the finale, but I really enjoyed most of the season.
FYI: We’ve been watching the first season of Prison Break this week and it’s great. Unfortunately, the second season’s not out on DVD yet, so we’ll soon have to find another show to watch!
Prison Break is something I’ve had laying around in it’s cellophane wrapper far too long!
But after many people badgering me to, I’ve started watching Firefly and love it. I didn’t get on with Buffy or Angel, but this is something different. The Wild West in Space. And unlike other space dramas it isn’t all clinical and clean and preaching morals… and I don’t think I’ve seen a single rubber faced alien yet.
Shame Fox did an Alias on it after just one series.
If you’re a Sci-Fi fan (and, being a programmer, you shoudld be!), I’ve got one word for you: ROSWELL. It’s a great show that was on for three seasons. I’ve got them all on DVD and have been known to watch a complete season in a single (very late) night. It’s hard to stop watching. ;>)
Really, I always dismissed Roswell as a sort of Dawsons Creek, but with Aliens.
Roswell is drama-oriented, as opposed to action-oriented. Personally, I find that refreshing. There’s more story development and less shoot-yet-another-slimy- monster-with-a-phaser. If you’re stricly an action junkie, you may not like it. With the possible exception of the original Star Trek, Roswell is my all-time favorite Sci-Fi show.
Guys, this post-24 discussion is now dominating the comments in my sidebar. Aren’t you worried that others will think we’re a bunch of geeks?
OK, I’m done with this thread… Did I mention that Jericho is on tonight and that it’s really good. OK, that’s the last one… And Numb3rs comes on right after it and it also really good. No, seriously, that’s the very last one…
