How Much Of The Web Do You Own?

A recent post by Google stated that they now have over a trillion unique pages in the Google search index. That made me wonder — how much of the Web do I own, exactly? A quick calculation showed me the answer: not enough!

Anyhow, I put together a silly little online tool called How Much Of The Web Do You Own? that you can use to determine your own percentage. First calculate how many pages you have on all your sites — use the Yahoo! Site Explorer to get the numbers, it’s more accurate than Google’s site: command — and plug that number into the tool. Then bash your head against the desk…

Think of it from the AdSense publisher’s perspective. If each page you own (and “own” can be defined pretty loosely to mean any page which you can monetize via AdSense) makes you an average of 1 cent per day (I’m just pulling that number from a hat), then 100 pages doesn’t make you much — a whole $1/day. You need to get up to 10,000 pages to start seeing a significant amount of $100/day. Just think of what you could make with a million or so pages…

Ha, I have so many pages, but such a small amount % of the web. A penny a day per page does seem to be fairly accurate though.

My stats are too low to even bother sharing :P but at least CNN’s are too! I’ve tried the “1 penny per page per day” routine, it’s just not as .. accurate as I hoped. More pages doesn’t always equate more income.

  3. Computer Helper on August 14th, 2008 3:11 pm

That is a good point Alex. You really need quality pages that get hit a lot to make money.

  4. Eric Giguere on August 14th, 2008 3:17 pm

One thing the tool doesn’t do is factor in quality, that’s for sure! If all you’re doing is autogenerating low-quality pages then I agree, I don’t think you’re going to make much money from those pages… that used to work a few years ago, but these days the search engines quickly drop those pages.

    I did say it was a silly tool… :-)

Nice tool, my 4000 pages translated into a mere 0.000000387396726% lol

  6. Club Par Excellance on August 15th, 2008 9:33 am

Nice tool I own about 0.000000003389657% for my web site and i only had 35 pages hehe.

  7. Education Faculty Jobs on August 15th, 2008 10:04 am

Funny to think about. Its probably over a penny a page for legit pages and like a hundredth of a penny for computer generated trash.

  8. Roger on August 15th, 2008 7:57 pm

    Haha nice comments so far.

But seriously, i concur with Alex that quantity isn’t the way around. Perhaps quality and quantity should come hand in hand.

It really shows how well the internet is organized and yes, how huge a network, it is. Great Post! :)

Makes you wonder how much content, or knowledge goes un-noticed in the chasm of the unlinked to internet?

  14. Long Island Realtor on August 20th, 2008 2:12 pm

Man, I got so much more work to do! I own WAY TO LITTLE! Thanks for the tip!

  15. Ann on August 21st, 2008 11:40 am

I am afraid there is no easy way to go around and compensate bad quality with many pages… but it is nice as an idea! Ann of sweet-is-my-love.com

    Cool tool, my friend!

It really does illustrate the importance of optimizing the pages you DO own to BOTH search engines and human readers. The gap is getting bigger between all the pages taking up webspace and those that are actually being read and are making contributions to the internet community.

I believe there are black swan websites still waiting to be discovered. What happens if, for example, there are websites with relevant and rich content but is not too popular?

  18. Tracking Kids With GPS on August 28th, 2008 12:03 am

I couldn’t imagine creating 10,000 pages worth of content let alone 1,000,000! 10,000 pages would take 27 1/2 years of making 1 page a day to attain – and that is just too long. You would need many different people making pages for you if you ever wanted to come close to making a million pages in your lifetime.

  19. Betty on August 28th, 2008 7:54 am

I have few websites but can you tell how much pages do you have per website. Thanks once again

  20. iPhone website on August 28th, 2008 11:07 am

The problem is that, when you only create pages on the internet for earning money with adsense, the internet will become a huge bin..

  21. MOin on August 30th, 2008 6:55 pm

sad, it seems like i don’t even exist. That’s not even funny.
But thanks for letting me know. This tool is relly gonna help me a lot.
    :)

  22. MOin on August 31st, 2008 2:15 am

i merely own 0.003241% of google with 400 pages and you are all right, i saw only 100 pages website earning 1000’s per month its all about content not the amount of pages or we can say ‘quality over quantity’

  23. Mario on September 2nd, 2008 7:27 pm

i think quality is over the quantity.

  24. Domain Name on September 4th, 2008 8:06 am

That’s lots of fun. It is the first time I actually understand how wast the web is. I’ve always thought Wikipedia was something enormous. But then with 374,792,881 pages across all sub-domains it owns only 0.0355% of the web!

  25. NJ Web Design on September 6th, 2008 12:26 pm

I agree with Mario – quantity over quality! How much of Digg’s percentage is mere rubbish?!?

  26. Mobile Phone News on September 6th, 2008 7:58 pm

Hahah, neat little cool. Im feeling insignificant with a 0.003451%, but my pages are good. I hope.

  27. Design Blog on September 8th, 2008 12:11 pm

I always wondered how much of the internet I actually owned, and I’ve always wanted to make a tool like this.

  28. cameramisc on September 8th, 2008 5:07 pm

    0.000000000945394% it’s mine. Wow, websites growing rapidly…

  29. WordPress Themes Gallery on September 10th, 2008 1:32 am

Amazing tool. I must say it’s a pretty neat idea and has great potential.

I own very less % of web, and it’s not even worth sharing. Anyways, good luck with your tool. I like the idea and I’m going to share with some of my friends when I get some free time.

  30. Miller L on September 11th, 2008 12:21 pm

I am also of the view that more pages you have, more you earn. I have seen building good number of pages do increase adsense income infact.

  31. Mr Article on September 12th, 2008 3:51 am

Damn, that’s alot of pages now, i didn’t think it would be that much, i remember when they used to show the amount indexed, just shows you how much the internet has grown over the past years. I definitely don’t own enough of it, i better get to work!

  32. mrjmw on September 19th, 2008 7:09 pm

I think you need to count how many pages you have indexed in Google. So the Yahoo site explorer will give you a more accurate number of pages you have in Google than Google’s site: command will?

  33. Dhirender yadav on October 1st, 2008 9:58 pm

this interesting calculation can be good for fun but i don’t think if you have 1million pages then you will be earning 10KUSD per month.

  34. steve001 on October 2nd, 2008 12:44 am

well the tool is interesting but i think it is not good until it is showing us the low percentage like 0.000479% so it is better for me to not know how much space i own over internet… :)

  35. Lexi Fortino - An AdSense Skeptic! on October 10th, 2008 3:58 pm

    Hi there everyone.

Has anyone heard of Matt Law and AdSense Systems?

I joined this community a few months ago and want to know if it is legit.

He says that I can build 420 websites using his system. Also, he teaches how to build the sites called Mega Adsense Sites.

I’m guessing that it might work as I’m 3 month’s old in adsense and making about $30.00 per month using his sites. Right now I have 19 websites up and running.

Anyway, I guess we’ll see. Please let me know your thoughts on his websites.

Reference website is http://www.adsensesystems.com. Not sure if I can post it here, but if not do a search for adsense systems.

    Thanks in advance,

    Lexi

Well, it’s a great tools how much you own web page share over the internet. But it still no meaning that the more webs page you have can get hit a lot to make money.

  37. Pallab on October 15th, 2008 3:40 pm

I own approximately 0.000000018247134% of the web.
