I stand by my earlier comment "Offload as much sys admin tasks as possible" unless it becomes part of your professional blog. After installing PostgreSQL 8.2.6 they released a new major version (8.3.0) just 2 days later. Start again. With everyone in the family getting sick and spending time migrating data, I was able to put the whole thing together as a step-by-step guide in <a href="http://www.devissues.com/upgrading-postgresql-new-major-version" rel="nofollow">Upgrading PostgreSQL to a new major version</a>.
