New Top-Level Domains (TLDs) and Implications for AdSense Publishers
In Chapter 4 of Make Easy Money with Google I discuss how domain names work and list off the top-level domains (TLDs) that should be considered when looking for a domain name. Some of the TLDs are restricted and of little interest to AdSense publishers.
ICANN (the people who control the naming system) has recently approved the creation of three new TLDs:
- .JOBS for “the
international human resource management community” - .TRAVEL for “any bonafide travel trade industry
associations, organizations or entities” - .XXX for “the needs of the global online
adult-entertainment community”
AdSense publishers should have no problems using the first two domains, but remember that the AdSense Program Policies forbid the use of AdSense on sites with “pornography, adult or mature content”, so any site in the .XXX top-level domain won't qualify for AdSense.
Note that .XXX hasn't actually been formally approved by ICANN yet, though it's close. I also note with amusement that the .XXX sponsoring organization is Canadian.
