Making the site Google-friendly

In my book, I tell Claude and the others how important it is use access logs and other tools to track who's visiting your site. One visitor to look out for in particular is the Googlebot, the robot that crawls the Web to fill Google's main search index. Looking over my recent logs, I see that while Yahoo!'s Slurp robot has been all over my site many times, the Googlebot seems reluctant to venture into my blog. My theory is that it doesn't like the default way that blojsom does its permalinks, so last night I spent some time redoing things. All the permalinks are now of the form [blog URL]/this-is-an-entry.html instead of [blog URL]/?permalink=this-is-an-entry.html. We'll see if that helps the Googlebot find its way.

Note that I don't want to scare any potential readers away from the book… there's no programming in the book, and I recommended to Stef that she sign up with Blogger for her blog. Installing and maintaining your own blog software like I do is a task best left to the more experienced. It's not that I'm some kind of uber-geek, but I do (mostly) enjoy playing with the software…
