Every new website needs a blog — or, do you need a site with that blog?

In my book the characters have to choose between building a blog or a website, but really that's a simplification. Today, the real choice for building a web presence is to decide between “blog only” or “site and blog”.

What I'm saying is that when you create a new site that's not a blog, think about adding a blog to it as well. Many sites have a “news” or “what's new” page, similar to the one on my personal site. You know, the kind of page where items of interest to readers of the site are listed in reverse chronological order… just like a blog does… hmm… You see what I'm saying, now?

Note that I'm not saying your site should be a blog, just that it should have a blog. There's a difference. Adding a blog gives your site several advantages:

Adding a blog to a site is relatively easy. All you need to do is create a free blog up on Blogger.com and change the blog settings so that the blog gets published to a folder on your site. Or you (or someone you trust) can install blogging software right on your web server. Once it's done, though, you'll find that it's easy to keep your “what's new” section updated, and you'll probably find excuses to start posting things that normally wouldn't make it on the site anyhow.

Something to consider.
