1&1 is excellent for buying your domains. Just do not use them for anything else. I learned that personally. But I do buy all of my domains from them.

Chuck, the private registration is free for as long as you have the domain with 1&1. I've renewed several with privacy and there were no additional charges beyond the $5.99/year fee. Try it out!

Nato, cheap hosting for multiple domains is very easy to find. For example, I can host up to 50 domains for only $4.95 a month using a reseller account at ResellerZoom, a division of HostingZoom. That's for a very basic account on a shared server, but it includes everything you need: WHM for reseller account management and cPanel for hosting management. Fantastico is installed so it's trivial to install a new WordPress blog. Haven't had any problems. Another place I recommend is Servage, which let you host unlimited domains for one low monthly cost. There are many other hosting services like these, though, so just shop around and see what people recommend.

As for buying lots of domain names on the cheap, you have to be on the lookout for special deals. I just buy them one at a time as I need them, so I haven't really looked into that.

I've never had any direct experience with 1&1, but I had a friend who was hosting there and she had to leave because they kept dicking around with her site setup, complaining that she was using too much bandwidth (unlikely).

I grew very wary of GoDaddy about a year ago, when it became clear to me what an egomaniac Bob Parsons was (it always scares me to deal with a company with an unstable personality at the helm...although GoDaddy had become a heck of a good registrar over the past few years). At the time, I had about 135 domains with them.

For domain registration, I'm using NameCheap.com. They've done a nice job for me. The domains are $8.88 per, I think. They have tech support via email...although it's not snappy, it's decent. And there are no delays...things become active right away.

However, the free privacy thing is appealing. Do you know if they charge you for it after the first year? I think that's the way NameCheap does it.

Nice article, I just found this place searching for adsense info. I'll have to check 1&1 out. I hear that there are lots of people registering like 100 domain names for adsense. Where can you get cheap domain names? I hear .info can cost 1$ where? and how can they afford hosting for all those domain names? where can you host 100 domains for cheap?
