Cheap Domains With Privacy
One of the things AdSense publishers tend to do over time is accumulate domain names. That’s certainly true for me, although I must admit I’m not doing everything I should with all the domains I own. (See 10 Ways to Benefit From Your Surplus Domains for ideas.) Although for historical reasons I have several domains registered with GoDaddy, for a couple of years now I’ve been using 1&1 for most of my domain purchasing. Why? Because it’s cheap — $5.99 for a .com domain, which is often cheaper than what you can get with GoDaddy even after you apply a coupon — and privacy is included in the price. In other words, I can register a domain and not have all my private information show up in the public records relating to that domain. With GoDaddy there’s an extra cost for privacy. If you just have one or two domains then it probably doesn’t matter, but when you’re dealing with dozens of domains then these costs do add up and it’s a good idea to minimize them whenever possible. 1&1 now has PayPal integration, just like GoDaddy, which makes domain purchasing even simpler.
While I heartily recommend 1&1 to anyone, note that the domain registration process isn’t nearly as quick as GoDaddy’s. With GoDaddy it’s possible to register a domain AND set the name server settings for the domain in one go, and the domain is ready within a few minutes. With 1&1 there’s a delay of several hours before the domain is available and you can’t set the name servers until the domain is ready in your account. For the most part this doesn’t bother me as I’m thinking long term with my domains and a few hours doesn’t make any difference, but if you need to do something quickly (as in you’re trying to quickly capitalize on a hot affiliate product) then use GoDaddy or another registrar.
Note that 1&1 also offers web hosting and related services, but I can’t comment on any of those. Just as I believe in separation of church and state, I also firmly believe in separation of hosting service and domain registrar. Keeping the two separate ensures that any problems you might have with one — particularly the hosting service — won’t affect the other. Take my advice on this one.

Nice article, I just found this place searching for adsense info. I’ll have to check 1&1 out. I hear that there are lots of people registering like 100 domain names for adsense. Where can you get cheap domain names? I hear .info can cost 1$ where? and how can they afford hosting for all those domain names? where can you host 100 domains for cheap?
I’ve never had any direct experience with 1&1, but I had a friend who was hosting there and she had to leave because they kept dicking around with her site setup, complaining that she was using too much bandwidth (unlikely).
I grew very wary of GoDaddy about a year ago, when it became clear to me what an egomaniac Bob Parsons was (it always scares me to deal with a company with an unstable personality at the helm…although GoDaddy had become a heck of a good registrar over the past few years). At the time, I had about 135 domains with them.
For domain registration, I’m using NameCheap.com. They’ve done a nice job for me. The domains are $8.88 per, I think. They have tech support via email…although it’s not snappy, it’s decent. And there are no delays…things become active right away.
However, the free privacy thing is appealing. Do you know if they charge you for it after the first year? I think that’s the way NameCheap does it.
Nato, cheap hosting for multiple domains is very easy to find. For example, I can host up to 50 domains for only $4.95 a month using a reseller account at ResellerZoom, a division of HostingZoom. That’s for a very basic account on a shared server, but it includes everything you need: WHM for reseller account management and cPanel for hosting management. Fantastico is installed so it’s trivial to install a new WordPress blog. Haven’t had any problems. Another place I recommend is Servage, which let you host unlimited domains for one low monthly cost. There are many other hosting services like these, though, so just shop around and see what people recommend.
As for buying lots of domain names on the cheap, you have to be on the lookout for special deals. I just buy them one at a time as I need them, so I haven’t really looked into that.
Chuck, the private registration is free for as long as you have the domain with 1&1. I’ve renewed several with privacy and there were no additional charges beyond the $5.99/year fee. Try it out!
Thanks for the tips guys, I just checked godaddy and they have a 0.99$ sale on .info domains right now.
1&1 is excellent for buying your domains. Just do not use them for anything else. I learned that personally. But I do buy all of my domains from them.
