AdSense Publishers Can Now Use 3 Link Units Per Page + Google Goes On Page Quality Offensive
Google has changed the AdSense program policies to allow publishers to include up to 3 link units per page. This is in addition to the other limits — up to 3 ad units and up to 2 referral units (the latter is per referral product) — and will be a welcome addition to publishers who wanted to use vertical link units in addition to the (surprisingly powerful) horizontal link unit they’ve been using up to now.
The announcement was posted as an afterthought in the Inside AdSense blog post that discusses Google’s new views on page quality. According to the policies:
Publishers using online advertising to drive traffic to pages showing Google ads must comply with the spirit of Google’s Landing Page Quality Guidelines. For instance, if you advertise for sites participating in the AdSense program, the advertising should not be deceptive to users.
If you’ve been publishing quality sites, as I’ve always advocated, this policy change won’t affect you. It’s clearly aimed at the poor-quality MFA (”made for AdSense”) sites that have managed to pollute so much of the search engine. This gives Google another excuse for removing such sites from the AdSense program.

I stumbled across this a couple days ago. I was having a subcontractor move my Adlinks code around inside a directory template, and though he moved it to the correct spot, he also left a copy in the original position. My eyes about popped out of my head when I saw two Adlinks units on the same page! I reloaded several times to make sure the second one wouldn’t disappear. Since they appear to be the best producers on my pages, and since they so neatly tuck into page designs, I will definitely be using more of these lil’ puppies. NOW…if only YPN would get over their pride and allow their stuff to appear on the same pages as Adsense, and ALSO release Adlinks units…we’d REALLY have something going…
Yes, it’s nice to have the option to put more on. It will be interesting to see what layouts come out of this change…
