AdSense Notifier 1.0.0

January 6th, 2010 by Eric Giguere Leave a reply »

I love Allen Holman’s AdSense Notifier extension for Firefox, but it’s not always updated in the most timely manner. It stopped working a few weeks ago due to a Firefox upgrade. Luckily, it’s GPL code (free to modify) so I’ve taken the latest version (0.9.8) and modified it to work with the current version of Firefox.

I also took the opportunity to make a couple of other changes to it:

  • The minimum refresh time between updates is now 5 minutes, down from 15 minutes.
  • The word “AdSense” is spelled correctly throughout the user interface. The old “Adsense” spelling always drove me nuts :-)

To install my modified version of the AdSense Notifier, which I’m calling version 1.0.0, please uninstall your current version (go to Tools -> Add-ons in your Firefox menu), restart Firefox and then click this link:

Install AdSense Notifier 1.0.0

You’ll be prompted to allow the install to proceed, so please do. Then another restart and you’ll be good to go. Your settings should be saved during this process.

If you have any problems, let me know.

Thanks for the post I didn’t even realize there was a program like this for Firefox. Checking into it now.

Maybe I’m stupid, but I can’t get it to logon. What is the AdSense userid? I tried my email address and I tried the 16 digit publisher ID I use and the password I use to sign in to the AdSense account. But nothing works. What am I doing wrong?

Doesn’t seem to want to log on, Eric. I was running the Notifier by “Why do Work”, (don’t know if that is the competitor you are talking about), and it works great on Ubuntu and FireFox 3.0.something. It logs in first time, every time.

Disbaled it, installed yours, rebooted as per your instructions and no matter what I do it neither logs on or returns any error message. I’ve cycled back and forth between the two three times now this morning and no joy.

    Hi

I’m hoping this starts working for foreign currencies. It’s the only reason I stopped using it.

But, I can’t get it to store/save my password. So every time I restart FireFox, it pops up to prompt me for the password.

Do you know what the issue could be? Maybe this is related to James Hoag’s issue?

Weird stuff, all I can say is that it’s working for me on Firefox 3.5.6.

Anyone who uses this plugin, make sure you go to the options page and set the userid & password correctly. The userid is the email address you use to logon to the AdSense console, the password is the same password.

One trick you can try to get it working is to login to the AdSense console manually from within Firefox, while the plugin is enabled. You should see the plugin update itself automatically after that. Maybe the login stuff isn’t working correctly, I’ll have to take a look. But I didn’t modify that code….

    Eric:

Downloaded Adsense Notifier through your link filled in my adsense email address and password and nothing happens. I see the icon and it says log in currently in progress but nothing happens?

Yes, there appears to be a problem. One workaround is to manually log in to your AdSense account, after which the notifier will work. I’m looking into it.

    Eric:

I have tried the manual approach however the adsense notifier still does not update.

    Thanks,

    Rick

The manual approach doesn’t work for me, either, Eric. BTW, Firefox is really confusing … I am running in on Linux (Ubuntu) (I’m a complete Linux newbie) and could swear it had already upgraded to 3.5.6, yet the “About Firefox” window reports version 3.0.16 with no option to update further showing.

I guess if this stuff was easy, we’d call it software, eh?

    Eric:

I just checked Firefox and it is version 3.5.7 running on Vista. What OS are you running it on and what version of FF?
