A Winning AdSense Business Plan
The controversy over AdSense Resurrected continues to rage… I you haven’t been following the comment stream on my AdSense Resurrected review you’re missing out on some heated wordplay… up to 89 comments now, a true record for this blog!
Anyhow, buried in one of the more recent comments is this interesting question:
I can set up the sites and I can create the optin and offer a freebie to begin building a list. Then my questions start: Where does the ongoing content come from for hundreds or thousands of sites — and how do you manage it? What do you put in the autoresponders to keep people coming back? Etc…
Good questions indeed. You need a plan. A business plan for your AdSense business. Here’s the basic plan that AdSense Resurrected promotes, a synthesis of content monetization and list building that I’ve seen others do before but perhaps not to the same extent as the authors.
Preliminaries
Before you start, make sure you do the following:
- Read my posts Are You An AdSensepreneur? and The AdSense Crapshoot for some background material.
- Get an autoresponder account from AWeber and learn to use it. I wouldn’t recommend using anyone else, all the top-name marketers use AWeber.
- Get yourself a good hosting plan that lets you host a large number of domains for a flat monthly fee. Personally, I recommend reseller hosting accounts from places like ResellerZoom, but a reseller account may be more complicated than you’d like. There are many places that sell “regular” hosting accounts that can host multiple domains. Don’t spend too much, though, you should be able to get everything you need for less than $20/month. (The budget reselling plan at ResellerZoom is just $6.95/month.)
- Learn to use cPanel, which is the hosting control panel that most places use. See these free cPanel videos as a starting point.
- Find a good domain registrar that doesn’t charge you an arm and a leg for domain names. GoDaddy is a popular choice, but they’re not the cheapest unless you find a good coupon code. Whenever I need to register a domain with GoDaddy, I always do a search for “GoDaddy coupon codes” and look for a coupon code that fits my current situation. (Right now, for example, you can find one that lets you get .com domains for $6.95.) The big problem with GoDaddy, however, is that privacy protection for domains costs extra. If you’re going to build site after site, you may want to get domains that offer built-in privacy protection at no extra charge. That’s why I use 1 & 1 for most of my domains: the .com domains are cheaper than GoDaddy’s and you get privacy protection for free. The downside is that new domains aren’t immediately available for use after registration, it takes several hours before they’re available and then you have to manually reset the DNS. But that doesn’t normally matter, as you need to spend the time preparing things anyhow.
- Find some sources of content. Whether it’s a good PLR site like PLRPro or just a set of reference materials you’ve collected, you’ll need stuff handy to create content.
Once you do all that, you’re ready to take the plunge…
The AdSense Business Plan
For any given niche, do the following:
- Create or collect 5 to 10 informational articles about the niche, ideally ordered so that they follow some kind of logical reading plan.
- Create or collect a “freebie” — a special report, ebook, video, etc. — that is also related to the niche.
- Grab an appropriate niche-related domain. See my tip on finding keyword-rich domains for free. (If you’re just starting out, you can also use a subdomain on a generic domain, although it’s normally better to use an individual domain for each site. Using subdomains will keep costs down.)
- Host the domain on your hosting service. Setup generic email forwarders for email addresses like “info@whatever.com”, “webmaster@whatever.com”, etc. while you’re at it. You may want to create an email alias for a pseudonym you’re created for yourself, which will come in handy later if you plan on using article marketing to get links and traffic back to the site. Use a tool like this random name generator to generate an alias.
- Create a website that consists of the following: a squeeze page (the home page), one page or more per article, an “about” page, and a “privacy policy” page. So minimally we’re talking 8-13 pages per site.
- Don’t place any ads on the home page. Instead, encourage visitors to sign up for your mailing list in order to get the freebie you’re prepared before.
- Load up the autoresponder with a series of messages. Each message directs the user to read one of the content pages you’ve collected and placed on the site, in the order you determined previously. Don’t place the content in the message, place the content on the site — the messages just get them to visit the site.
- Each content page includes AdSense ads on it as well as embedded affiliate links (if appropriate) and perhaps other monetization options (related books on Amazon, etc.)
- Send traffic to the landing page using AdWords, article marketing, etc.
- Move on to the next topic.
That’s pretty much it. Once you have several sites up and running, start looking at the statistics. Which ones are making you real money? Think about adding more content to those. Otherwise, just repeat the process over and over again until you get sick of it… You’ll probably want to find some tools to help you automate some of the drudgery. (That’s partially why I wrote PLRSiteBuilder in the first place.) It all takes time, though. Even if you have the content ready to go, creating a new site with the autoresponder messages loaded up and tested will take a good 30-60 minutes per site. More if you’re tweaking content or if you’re trying to make the site look extra-fancy.
Repeat visitors are the key to this model, hence the mailing list. The more times someone visits your site, the more chances that they’ll click an ad or buy something through an affiliate link. You can also make the content available for free to people who don’t want to sign up for your list and make a bit of money that way (the traditional AdSense model) but the focus is on the list.
There you go. The tough part is doing it all.

Great post, Eric!
It answers my question about what to put in the autoresponders. Looks like consistently adding content is not an issue. PLRSiteBuilder really does make sense to ease the effort of creating lots of sites.
Thank you.
Thanks, Deb… I’m glad it helped.
If you’re going to consistently add content, you should probably use a blog… but there’s only so many blogs you can run at any given time without going crazy, I find.
Don’t go the open-ended route. Choose a very niche topic and write a small amount of content for it. Then move on to the next. I think the real key here is the willingness to try many different topics until you find the ones that work well for you. I don’t think it’s unusual to have a few high-earning sites in a portfolio while most of the other sites just turn a small profit. But the point is that they are turning a profit — just keep your expenses low (flat rate hosting, cheap domains, flat rate autoresponder) and you should see a positive return. The trick is to get that return up so that instead of making $100/day you’re making $1000 or even $10000 a day. (No, I’m not at the $10K/day level yet… that’s a tough one to crack :-))
Eric
Would you suggest an embedded form or pop up for the mailing list signup?
Is the home page the only location for the signup or should it go on all pages?
I’m not a big fan of popups, generally. I find they annoy me, so they must annoy others. But marketers wouldn’t use them if they didn’t work… so it probably depends on the niche. I don’t use them generally, though, and remember you can’t use them on any page you’re sending AdWords traffic to.
The signup can be on any page. The key is to have at least one, no-ad signup page (which is normally the home page) somewhere you can direct traffic to. You don’t want Google to start thinking you’re doing AdSense arbitrage, which they don’t like anymore.
And you can certainly have multiple squeeze pages that focus on different keywords if you’re an AdWords advertiser — you’ll want to reduce your costs by tuning the pages for your keywords.
Eric
Good post. However, in step number 9, you sort of glossed over the hard part — getting traffic to your new adsense site. What do you find works best? Articles? Adwords? (It seems like the AdWords clicks you pay for might be more that the AdSense clicks you get paid for.)
Johnny
Of all the steps, I do think that #9 — getting traffic — is the hardest. It’s the hardest thing for anyone trying to monetize a website, AdSense or not.
The key to not spending more on AdWords than you’re making with AdSense is to get people to sign up for your list and then expose them to multiple pages on the site. Give them many chances to click ads or buy affiliate products and that you’ll make more than you spent getting them to the site. As long as your ad costs aren’t too high… if I recall correctly, AdSense Resurrected recommended no more than 25 or 30 cents per customer. If ads are too expensive, use co-registration or other schemes.
Eric,
That seems like a very sound plan (it’s really classic “two-step” direct marketing). Personally, I’m going deep, not wide, with a few “authority” sites rather than hundreds (or even thousands!) of small sites.
Having a lot of sites seems like it would be a losing game. It would be difficult to add new content to hundreds of sites on a regular basis (to give people a reason to return) and managing hundreds of lists seems like it would be a true nightmare.
Both approaches are valid. The many-sites approach isn’t as tough as you think, though, because there’s no requirement to add new content on a regular basis. You need to get new visitors on a regular basis, but the content can be finite.
It’s a pain to create all those lists, yes, but it’s doable if you give yourself enough time. One of the features of AdSenseResurrector is the ability to create the pre-canned emails that direct readers to the appropriate pages of the site, so in theory you can take the emails and just load them up (both text and HTML versions are generated) into your autoresponder. That’s still a manual process, though.
There’s no getting away from it, you still have to do SOME work with all of these techniques!
Eric
Thanks for this info!
I am building a review page “Company Name A” vs “Company Name B”. “Company Name A” is trademarked. I am promoting “Company Name B”.
From what I can tell:
I can bid on the keyword “Company Name A”.
I can NOT include “Company Name A” in the ad text.
Is this accurate?
Scott,
for review websites, my recommendation is to build it into a one-stop destination for reviews.
You could start reviewing one type of product, and slowly work your way of reviewing more products.
Do not forget your affiliate links.
About advertising this.
I suggest you advertise on the product type. For e.g. if the product is an Acne cream, I’ll advertise it as “Do not know which products can help clear your Acne? Read our reviews right now, and make an informed purchase.”
But of course, if the brands are popular, you might want to use them, but if they are trademarked, then do not use them. Some companies however allow the use of their company names in the advertisements. So keep a look out for that.
My suggestion is to keep the cost of the bid as low as possible. That should be key on top of getting high click through rates.
Hope it helps.
Zeila
Google allows you to use trademarks in ad text unless the trademark owner has filed an objection with Google. The easiest thing to do is to try to create an ad with a trademark… if it doesn’t get rejected (sometimes it takes a day or so) then you’re OK.
Note that you can normally bid on trademarks with impunity. We’re only talking about using the trademark in the ad text and/or domain. (Always avoid trademarks in domains…)
As Zeila says, you want to keep bid costs to a minimum. Look for long tail keywords that get fewer impressions but that will cost less as well.
